Open workshops: Planting seeds, a greenhouse for talent.
Creativity is a function that would inhabit the park without appropriating it. Two workshops act as “incubators” for artists and designers through the sharing of equipment, knowledge and space. The collective workspaces replace the old mechanics’ workshops once located here and connect to the Gazi cultural centre on the other side of Pireos.

The cut-out spaces – the patios – offer a new type of public space for spring and summer nights.

The flower market.
Shopping is recreation and from the flower market you can buy and take home a piece of the park. The market hall would be open 24h a day selling plants during the day and functioning as bar and music venue at night. The flower market is the liminal zone between Gazi nightlife and the archaeological parks. The building offers an experience in between a park, a museum shop and a strip mall. A non-elitist meeting place in a commercial public space experienced by all five senses.

The ground plane is raised to create the necessary space to house different activities through peeling of the bas-relief. It provides the park with an external morphological unity and creates a clear facade towards the street but at the same time protects and extends the park.

The park is laid out like a notional archipelago. You move on the hard plane and rest on the soft islands. The design is a camouflage pattern manipulated in response to the topography and the readings of the site. The vegetation is divided in to four categories: low, medium, high and patios

The tool for distributing the natural elements in the park is the pattern of camouflage:
camouflage in the sense of a schematisation of nature through fractals.

We propose a non-monumental intervention where Keramikos itself is the monument: a park.

As a case study we have developed a design for Keramikos, a central and historically important area that has been left to its own fate for decades. We see it as a missing link, part of a bigger green belt expanding on both sides of Pireos, an extension of the “big promenade” that stretches from the Acropolis through the historic centre of Athens.

Pireos st. almost completely lacks green areas and pedestrian zones. The green space per capita in the city of Athens is 2sqm. 8sqm is what is considered a healthy amount.
